When it was first seen, it was brilliant. Then it burned up. The Chevy Vega was Motor Trend’s ‘Car of the Year’ in 1971, but by the time of its demise in ‘77, like a huge meteor, it left a smoking crater in not only the province of Chevrolet, but also the entire state of General Motors. In ’74, we special-ordered this GT Estate with every option in the book. It rode and handled better than anything else in its class. We loved it until the engine blew at 40,000 miles. Replace it with another that wouldn’t last? We made an even poorer decision. We dumped in a turbo Buick V6. It was fast, just like a shooting star. But it ran so hot that we had to shut it down after just a few minutes. Might’ve made an okay drag-racer, but its days of grocery-getting were done.
