While there are a few outstanding designs in the early '50s, it's 1955 when Chevrolet introduces its wildly successful new V8 in a brand-new body shell and when super high style really takes off.  Takes off?  Watch how tail fins become the epicenter of automotive design as the '50s turn into the '60s.  In 1957, Chrysler Corporation introduces spectacular huge fins with the slogan "Suddenly it's 1960."  Plymouth, Dodge, deSoto and Chrysler keep that style through 1961, so we take a little liberty and include '61 models in our "Fab Fifties" gallery.  (Actually, Ford keeps vestigial fins through 1961 and Cadillac -- the brand that started it all -- is the sole General Motors marque that keeps 'em, all the way through 1964 and even later, depending on how you squint.)
